Un paio d'anni fa decisi di testare Tomcat per vedere come esso si sposava con Apache e i vari connettori. Realizzai una piccola applicazione web in Java, la tirai su e presi un dominio. L'idea era vedere cosa succedeva e come essa avrebbe funzionato.

Nacque penpalseverywhere.net, un progetto "minimale" per fornire uno strumento per chi e' alla ricerca di un penpal. Pur senza pubblicizzarlo, il sito veniva frequentato con una certa regolarita' da alcuni utenti. Alla scadenza del dominio, decisi comunque di non rinnovarlo e spegnere tutto: la sperimentazione era finita, i risultati erano buoni e, avendo poca RAM, non volevo buttare risorse inutili.

Stamattina, sistemando il server, ho ritrovato Tomcat e tutta la webapp "Penpal". C'e' ancora tutto il database e funziona perfettamente. Ho deciso, quindi, di sfruttare una delle promozioni che mi vengono ogni tanto inviate e riprendere il dominio.

Il sito, quindi, e' di nuovo ufficialmente aperto, esattamente identico a come era prima. Modifiche? Forse, vediamo. Appena avro' tempo.

Ma la verita' e' un'altra: ho bisogno di Tomcat per un progetto su cui sto lavorando da qualche tempo e che sara' davvero interessante per i miei clienti e per gli utenti comuni.

A couple of years ago, I wanted to try Tomcat to see if it could work flawlessy with Apache, using the jk connectors. I created a simple webapp in Java, deployed it and registered a domain. I just wanted to test it so, after deploying the app, I started to see how it was going to work.

That was the origin of penpalseverywhere.net, a minimal project that just wanted to give a simple tool to place ads and find penpals all around the world. Even if I didn't advertise it at all, there were some regular and happy users. After one year, I decided not to renew the domain and let it die. After all, the experimentation was over (and successful). Moreover, I didn't want to waste the little RAM I had on my Via Epia server.

This morning, doing some maintenance on dragas, I've found Tomcat and the Penpal application, still in perfect working conditions. I re-registered the domain, thanks to one of the coupons I get via e-mail, and re-opened it.

The site is up and running, with all the old ads inside and exactly as it was one year ago, when I turned it off. Will I modify it? Who knows. :-) Perhaps I'll do it, as soon as I'll have enough time.

To be honest, there's another thing to say: I need Tomcat for another project I've been working on for some time and that will be really interesting both for my customers as well as for common users.
